Coccydynia (pain in the coccyx) is five times more common in women than in men. Its most common etiology is external trauma (such as a fall). However, it may also be caused by internal trauma or by injury during childbirth. Furthermore, another cause can be the prolonged seat on a certain surface.
Oftentimes, Coccydynia involves tailbone pain which progresses. Therefore, in such cases a thorough examination of pelvic floor muscles should be performed in order to rule out soft tissue problems.
Pain during intercourse, also known as dyspareunia, is also very common.
